Recently during my constant web hunting for quality stuff I was tempted by a banner of FOXY BINGO promising to add twenty pounds to your account if you join for free and deposit at least ten pounds. I felt lucky and didn’t think much to give it a try. I passed through the quick registration and joined few games which rules were quite vague to me and … I won 300 pounds.

Somebody would call it the luck of the beginner – I do not tend to give any definitions but am quite happy with my award which already managed to spend. I don’t think would try one more time – it was just my lucky day. Do you feel the chance on your shoulder today?

Ingredients:
175g self-raising flour
75g plain flour
2 level tsp Mixed Spice – cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger
125g glacé cherries, quartered
150g currants
225g sultanas
225g butter, softened
225g caster sugar, plus extra for rolling out
4 large free-range eggs
2tbsp milk
Finely grated zest of 1 unwaxed lemon and 1 orange
500g Golden Marzipan
3tbsp apricot jam

Method:
Line a deep 20cm cake tin with two layers of baking paper. Preheat the oven to 150C/130C Fan/Gas 2.

Sift the flours and spice into a bowl and stir in the dried fruit. In a different bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and creamy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time.

Fold in the milk, flour mix and zest, then put half the mixture in the cake tin. Level the top. Dust a surface with caster sugar and roll out a third of the marzipan into a circle the same size as the cake. Lay it on top.

Cover with the rest of the cake mix and level the top. Bake for 2 hours 30 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Remove from the tin and leave to cool.

Roll out half the remaining marzipan into a circle the size of the cake. Shape the rest into 11 balls. Heat the jam with 1tsp boiling water until melted, then brush on to the top of the cake and cover with the marzipan.

Mark the top into a criss-cross pattern with a knife. Put the marzipan balls round the edge, sticking them on with jam. Lightly brown the marzipan under the grill or with a chef’s blowtorch.

1. No dividing walls means the space is fluid – I can decide where to put the living or sleeping areas. I choose to sleep on a futon rather than a sofa bed because then I don’t have to move my coffee table every night!

2. I don’t hoard. I live here out of necessity, but the size of the flat is liberating in one way – I can’t collect clutter. Box files on bookshelves help keep things in order, and hanging fabric hides any mess.

3. I see the storage potential of everything. My breakfast bar separates off the kitchen and gives me a place to eat meals rather than slumping on the sofa. It also has storage on the kitchen side for cutlery, plates and pots, and on the living room side for books, cosmetics and stationery.

4. Having a balcony is lucky! I decorate it with lanterns, a table and chairs so that it provides an extra room when the weather’s good.

5. Most things in my apartment have two uses. When the futon is rolled out at night, the glass-brick screen creates my dressing room.
